A lot of women, myself included,
have a bit of a superhero complex.
We all know the cliché of women swooning over men in uniforms – I
personally believe that it’s not just about looking good in a uniform, but that
it actually comes from a place much deeper than superficiality. Men in uniform are typically the
protectors in our society. They’re
the policemen, the firemen, the military men fighting for our country – their
uniforms, closer to superhero costumes than people are often willing to
concede, visually define them as our protectors – as noble folk who lead
selfless lives, putting the greater good of humanity over their own. In the realm of fairytales, these
uniformed men are modern day versions of knights in shining armor, and all us
Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty hopefuls love them for it. (I should mention that this isn’t all
gender-role specific. Pretty sure
GLBT romantics love a uniformed protector just as much as the next person. Hell, society in general loves the
uniformed folk – they’re as close as we get to having Superman and Batman jump
off the pages of our comic books and into our real lives.)
With all the respect in the world
for our uniformed protectors out there, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about
the unsung heroes of the world...
